London airport chaos: Plane engine explodes at London City Airport & fire causes Heathrow T1 evacuation

  • The engine of a Swiss Air plane explodes seconds before take-off
  • Heathrow Terminal 1 evacuated after vehicle fire

Four people needed treatment for minor injuries after the engine of a plane bound for Geneva at London City Airport exploded.

Passenger Mike Mompi said: “There was a large bang and flames which grew and grew and large chunks of what looked like chunks of red-hot metal started flying up.

“People started freaking out. In about 20 seconds we would have been in the air.”

London City Airport called the explosion a “minor technical incident”.

However, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch disagreed.

Heathrow fire

This morning another airport incident caused delays, as a vehicle fire at Heathrow saw the whole of Terminal 1 evacuated.

People were forced to queue in corridors following the fire.

Passengers said they were “appalled” with the chaos in the terminal.

A Heathrow spokeswoman said: “Fire alarms were activated in Terminal 1 after smoke from a small vehicle fire on the airfield blew into the building. No passengers were at risk and Heathrow’s fire service quickly extinguished the fire. The terminal is now fully open and staff are helping passengers to return to their journey as quickly as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
