Flood alerts for the south east as rain batters London

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts across the south east after a weekend of heavy rainfall.

Two flood alerts have been issued, as the Met Office has warned that the UK faces a wetter than average winter.

Last winter was the wettest since records began in 1910. More than 20 inches of rain fell across the UK, and severe flooding across the Somerset Levels saw the army being brought in to help flood-struck residents.

According to the Standard, Met Office forecaster Laura Corrigan said: “The rain will ease and fragment for most places as we move through the day, but it will be quite persistent in north-east Scotland.

“There is also a chance of windspeeds in the north-east of England and up into Scotland reaching between 35 and 40mph.”
