The government has blocked the construction of what would have been Britain’s largest mosque, according to reports in the Sunday Telegraph.

The massive mosque, which would have been three times the size of St Paul’s Cathedral, and housed over 10,000 worshippers, was blocked by ministers over fears its construction may have stoked divisions in Newham.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, a source said: “This proposal has created a great deal of division in Newham. That would get a lot worse if the thing was built.”

The proposals had been put forward by the Tablighi Jamaat, a Muslim missionary group, which has been embroiled in a 16-year planning war to have the mosque built. The plans were also rejected in 2012.
