Boris in spotlight over “secret deal” to rent Olympic stadium to West Ham

London Mayor Boris Johnson is under pressure to answer questions over a “secret deal” to rent out the Olympic stadium to football club West Ham United.

The London Assembly is calling for details on the transfer of the stadium, which cost over £429m to build ahead of the 2012 Olympics in London.

The assembly is demanding to know exactly how much money will be recouped by British taxpayers if the football club is sold after taking its iconic new premises.

According to ITV news, taxpayers are already set to stump up £190m to convert the stadium ahead of West Ham’s move.

Though the finer details of the deal remain secret, West Ham is reputedly spending £15m to assist the conversion, and will pay annual rent of £2.5m a year.

Should the club then be sold, the London Assembly has said that it wants to know what funds can be clawed back under the terms of the deal.

A London Assembly report said: “Given that public finances worth over £600 million have funded the stadium’s construction and conversion costs, Londoners deserve to know what they will receive, should WHUFC’s owners sell up.”
