The 6 most iconic London fashion trends of the last 50 years

3. Punk

Punk

One of the world’s most memorable fashion styles, punk emerged in the mid-70s and was characterised by the scruffy, dirty, reckless and anarchistic look, steeped in irony.

Inspired by economic, social and political conflict, clothes were often deliberately torn and held together with safety pins or duct tape. Shaved heads or spiky mohawks bleached and dyed a bright colour were typical, as were tartan and military boots or Dr Martens.

Punk is one of the few youth subcultures that never really died, and has heavily influenced this decade’s style.
