The 6 most iconic London fashion trends of the last 50 years

New romantic

The new romantic style was popular in the early 80s around music artists such as Spandau Ballet and Boy George. Men wore pirate-style full-sleeved “buccaneer” shirts, earrings and military jackets, and occasionally sported bold makeup.

It had a very strong influence in Britain after the nightclub Billy’s in London’s Dean Street became the hub of the emerging new romantic scene when young people became disillusioned with punk rock.

New romantic fashion is equally mocked and admired these days. People wonder how the flock of seagulls haircut was ever normal but the androgynous style has become a classic.
