Gender pay gap widens and 5 other killer employment stats

The gender pay gap has risen this year to 10% from 9.5% in 2012, a report from the Office for National Statistics today revealed.

The survey, for the year to April 2013, looked at average hours and earnings in the UK and found a number of changes from the previous year including:

1.       Weekly earnings up

Weekly earnings for full-time employees were £517, up 2.2% from £506 in 2012.

2.       Full time women earn £100 less per week than their male counterparts

For men, full-time earnings were £556 per week, up 1.8%, compared with £459 for women, up 2.2%.

3.      Average salary is £27,000

Annual earnings for full-time employees were £27,000, an increase of 2.1% from the previous year.

4.       Both lowest and highest paid get 1.5% increase

A total of 10% of full-time employees earned less than £7.28 per hour, an increase of 1.5% on 2012. At the other end of the distribution, 10% of full-time employees earned more than £27.02 per hour, which was also an increase of 1.5% compared with the previous year.

5.       London employees are best paid

Weekly pay for full-time employees was highest in London, at £658, and lowest in Northern Ireland, at £460.
