UK hit by "multi-pronged storm' of more rain and strong winds

Southwest of England is in for a “multi-pronged storm” of heavy winds, rain and snow, weather forecasters have warned.

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 17 severe flood warnings as up to 40mm (1.6 inches) of rain is set to fall in just six hours. Also, gusts of up to 80mph are expected to hit parts of the country.

The agency has also issued more than 350 less serious flood warnings and alerts, mostly in southern England and the Midlands.

The River Thames is also predicted to rise to its highest level in more than 60 years.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the government would “fight at every front to help people” hit by floods.

He told BBC Breakfast: “I want people to know that the government absolutely stands behind this relief effort.”
