FTSE 100 reaches highest level since 2000

The FTSE 100 index hit its highest level since January 2000 yesterday after housebuilding shares rocketed.

A positive outlook from construction firm Taylor Wimpey showed that the company was on course to meet all of its targets by next year and saw shares jump from 6.2p to 112.5p.

Meanwhile, rival construction firm Barratt Developments also enjoyed a wave of support with shares up by 9.5p to 383.8p.

The FTSE100 index had earlier hit 6877.39, its best level since January 1999, but subsequently fell slightly. To record an all-time high, the index would need to reach 6950.6, last reached on December 31 1999.
