Poor maths skills cost the economy…er… just a minute… £20bn?

If you’re ashamed of your poor maths skills, you’re probably not the only one.

According to research, significant numbers of people are held back by poor numeracy skills, with one charity claiming our bad maths skills are costing the economy £20bn.

Almost a third of people said they had trouble with numeracy, while one in four people said their maths was no better than satisfactory, according to a survey by National Numeracy.

In fact, previous research showed half of us are no better at maths than the average 11-year old.

The charity is encouraging people to take an online test to find out what their level of ability is. If the idea of testing your maths skills is terrifying, the charity also provides resources to help people improve their numeracy.
