Is the unemployment rate going back up?

It looks that way

Last month we reported that unemployment was on the rise for the first time in two years.

And it seems that trend is continuing as figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show unemployment has risen by 25,000 in the quarter to June.

There are now 1.85 million people unemployed and 31.04 million people employed in the UK.

ONS statistician David Freeman said: “This is now the second consecutive time we’ve reported fewer people in work on the quarter. While it’s still too early to conclude that the jobs market is levelling off, these figures certainly strengthen that possibility. Growth in pay, however, remains solid.”

In the three months to June, there were 1.01 million unemployed men, little changed compared with January to March, and 838,000 unemployed women, 17,000 more than for January to March.
