Infographic: As complaints rocket, could the big six energy firms lose their grip on the market?

Complaints against the big six energy suppliers are higher than ever according to energy watchdog Ofgem.

Over the first 9 months of the year the watchdog says the firms received a staggering 4.9 million complaints from angry customers. The total figure for 2014 is expected to rise higher than last year’s 5.5 million complaints.

Just last week, Ofgem threatened ScottishPower with a sales ban due to poor customer service. The energy provider has been strongly reprimanded after an investigation discovered the company is failing to resolve complaints, has a billing backlog and are slow when it comes to answering customer queries.

Meanwhile, Npower is being investigated for similar problems, but on an even bigger scale.

A recent survey by Which? did little to instil confidence in the UK’s biggest energy suppliers. Based on the opinions of over 8,500 people, customers were least satisfied with market giants Npower (31%) and British Gas (39%), while smaller suppliers like Good Energy (82%) and Ecotricity (82%) ranked highest.
