Why has US billionaire Michael Bloomberg received a British knighthood?

Billionaire businessman and politician Michael Bloomberg has received a knighthood from the Queen.

But the 72-year-old former mayor of New York will not become Sir Michael Bloomberg. Instead his full title will be: Michael Bloomberg, Honorary Knight of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Snappy. Though it will most likely be expressed by putting the letters KBE after his name.

Bloomberg cannot be known as “Sir”, as he is a foreign national.

According to the British Embassy in Washington, Bloomberg has been awarded the honorary knighthood for his “prodigious entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors [sic], and the many ways in which they have benefited the United Kingdom and the UK-US special relationship”

On receiving the knighthood, Bloomberg said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition, which is especially meaningful to me because of my close personal, business, and philanthropic ties to London and Britain, which stretch back four decades.

“Over those years it has been a great privilege to work with British leaders on a wide variety of issues, and to invest - commercially, culturally, and civically - in the future of Britain, a place I have long considered my second home.”
