Toffs at the top: Privately educated people dominate everything, research finds

Crazy number of people from wealthy backgrounds make up the UK’s most well-respected positions

If you’ve reached a senior level in your field and weren’t privately educated you can give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back today, as a study has found you’re probably in the minority.

The Sutton Trust looked at the educational backgrounds of more than 1,200 people and found privately educated people made up:

42% of British Bafta winners

19% of British Brit award winners

67% of British Oscar winners

74% of the UK’s top judges (78% also went to Oxford or Cambridge)

71% of top military personnel

51% of leading print journalists

51% of solicitors

50% of the cabinet

13% of the shadow cabinet

32% of MPs

61% of top doctors

Only 7% of the population

Chairman of the Sutton Trust Sir Peter Lampl said: “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are very much greater if you went to an independent school.

“As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and team work which are vital to career success.

“The key to improving social mobility at the top is to open up independent schools to all pupils based on merit not money as demonstrated by our successful Open Access scheme, as well as support for highly able students in state schools.”
