There have been FIVE MILLION cases of fraud in just one year in the UK

But 78% of victims got compensation

There were 5.1 million instances of fraud last year, according to the National Crime Survey.

More than half of these instances involved financial loss, however in 78% of reported fraud cases the victim was compensated, with 62% reimbursed in full.

This is the first time the survey, produced by the Office for National Statistics, has included fraud.

More than eight people in 100 were victims of fraud at some point last year, the survey said.

An ONS spokesman said: “Although we estimate that there were more than seven million fraud and computer misuse incidents in the past year, this does not necessarily imply a recent rise in crime as the new measures bring into scope a large volume of offences not previously included in the Crime Survey.”
