One in five Londoners contacted by claims management companies in 24 hours

One in five Londoners have been contacted by claims management companies in the last 24 hours, according to a survey released today.

Insurance company AXA UK said that of the people it surveyed, 19% of Londoners had been contacted or had received messages in the previous 24 hours from firms offering to help them gain compensation for a variety of potential issues, including mis-sold financial products, such as payment protection insurance (PPI) and personal injuries.

The survey revealed that almost a quarter of respondents, 23%, said that they had received such messages in the last week.

Half of those surveyed said that they felt angry at being bombarded with so many messages, and that it was an invasion of privacy, while two thirds of Londoners believe that sending unsolicited messages should be made illegal.

AXA UK’s claims expert David Fisher joined calls for increased regulation in the area.

He said: “[It is] time for the Ministry of Justice’s claims management regulation unit to address these spamming tactics so that the claims management companies’ endless search for growth does not continue to significantly impact consumers and unnecessarily invade the privacy of thousands of people every day.”
