No, the Queen didn’t say she supported a Brexit

Let’s be honest, we don’t really know what Her Maj thinks

It has been reported that the Queen is a supporter of Britain leaving the EU – but how true is it?

The front page of The Sun today claims the Queen backs a Brexit, after allegedly having a bust-up with pro-EU Nick Clegg during a lunch at Windsor Castle in 2011.

A “highly reliable” source told The Sun: “People who heard their conversation were left in no doubt at all about the Queen’s views on European integration.

“It was really something, and it went on for quite a while.

“The EU is clearly something Her Majesty feels passionately about.”

However, Clegg said he didn’t remember the conversation and Buckingham Palace denied the Queen would have taken a side. The palace said: “The Queen remains politically neutral, as she has for 63 years. We would never comment on spurious, anonymously sourced claims.

“The referendum will be a matter for the British people.”

In fact, it’s not clear what the Queen’s views of the subject are at all.
