Bill Gates doubles green energy investment to $2bn

World’s most moneyed man spends money to save the world

Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to double his investment in innovative renewable energy projects.

Gates is the world’s richest man with an estimated fortune of $80bn, according to Forbes, and has already directly invested around $1bn across 15 companies.

Projects Gates has already invested in include battery storage, next-generation nuclear and free air carbon capture

Speaking to the FT, Gates said he planned to double his investments over the next five years.

“The only way you can get to the very positive scenario is by great innovation,” he said. “Innovation really does bend the curve.”

He also said governments should consider changing renewables funding models which currently subsidise existing technologies, and instead put a greater emphasis on research and development within the sector.
